Drawing from Yogyakarta’s energetic drumming scene, Rhizomes of Rhythms highlights the particular significances of drum bands and marching bands in Indonesia and both their tangible and intangible ties. The resonant bodies of drums are turned into sounding praxinoscopes whose produced animations and accompanying soundtrack echo the practice’s diverse entanglements, through historical, social, cultural and mystical narratives. Evoking a wide range of rhythms and time cycles, from military drumrolls to haunting stories of drum bands only audible from midnight to sunrise.

Évoquant un large éventail de rythmes et de cycles allant des roulements de tambours militaires aux mythes de fanfares que l’on n’entend en ville que de minuit au lever du soleil, cette installation s’insipre des relations multiples des fanfares en Indonésie. Les caisses de résonnance de tambours se muent en praxinoscopes dont les animations et la bande-son qui en émane font écho aux récits historiques, sociaux, culturels et mystiques sur lesquels se fondent ces pratiques de percussions collectives.
