Mixed-media installation
(magnetic tape and recording of Saidu Ba, Walkman, in-ear headphones, magnifying glasses, laser print, wood, mirror, light... 112 x 55 x 150cm)
The main components of a Walkman player were dismantled in order to recompose a theatrical space. On a rectangular board, a loop of magnetic tape comes out of a cassette to be read by the play head, situated on the opposite side. The core of the scene, where two in-ear headphones covered with tiny masks respectively emit the sound of a voice and its instrumental support, is physically outlined by the magnetic tape that feeds them with sound. Saidu Ba, the musician who recorded the cassette used here, accompanies his storytelling with some "hodou" Mauritanian guitar.
Les principaux éléments d'un Walkman ont été réagencés en une scène d'aspect théâtrale. Sur une plaque rectangulaire, une boucle de bande magnétique est extraite de sa cassette, à droite de la scène, pour être lue par la tête de lecture située du côté opposé. Le centre de l'espace, où deux écouteurs munis chacun d'un petit masque diffusent respectivement une voix et son accompagnement instrumental, est physiquement délimité par la bande magnétique qui est à l'origine du son. Saidu Ba, le musicien qui a enregistré la cassette utilisée ici joue de la guitare mauritanienne (Hodou) tout en commentant sa propre interprétation.
